PowerNet Vehicle Architecture

  • The first vehicles built with the PowerNet vehicle architecture are 2011MY JC, LX, and LD.
  • Vehicles with the PowerNet vehicle architecture do not contain a FCMCGW or a TIPMCGW central gateway, and thus do not contain a Diagnostic CAN-C bus.
  • They feature a CAN-C bus and a CAN-IHS bus, both of which are connected directly to the 16-pin J1962 diagnostic connector as follows:
CAN-C                   pins 6 and 14                      high-speed CAN
CAN-IHS                pins 3 and 11                      internal high-speed CAN
  • A sample topology diagram from a PowerNet vehicle is below.

Fiat 500 Vehicle Architecture

  • The first Fiat vehicle being sold in Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge dealerships is the Fiat 500 (2012MY FF).
  • The Fiat 500 does not contain a FCMCGW or a TIPMCGW central gateway, and thus does not contain a Diagnostic CAN-C bus.
  • It features a CAN-C bus and a CAN-B bus, both of which are connected directly to the 16-pin J1962 diagnostic connector as follows:
CAN-C                   pins 6 and 14                      high-speed CAN
CAN-B                   pins 1 and 9                        low-speed CAN

  • A sample topology diagram from a Fiat 500 vehicle is below.

StarMOBILE Smart Cable

  • The StarMOBILE device cannot support vehicles with the PowerNet vehicle architecture* or the Fiat 500 with the standard vehicle cable.
  • The StarMOBILE device contains only one high-speed CAN transceiver.
    • When the standard vehicle cable is used, StarMOBILE can only support CAN communication on J1962 diagnostic connector pins 6 and 14.
  • In order to support the second CAN bus that is present at the J1962 diagnostic connector on vehicles with PowerNet architecture and the Fiat 500, the StarMOBILE Smart Cable must be used.
    • The StarMOBILE Smart Cable contains a second high-speed CAN transceiver that provides the StarMOBILE device with the ability to support both the CAN-C and the CAN-IHS buses on vehicles with PowerNet architecture.
    • It also contains a low-speed CAN transceiver that provides the ability to support both the CAN-C and the CAN-B buses on the Fiat 500.

StarMOBILE SmartCable – Model: 312
*NOTE: The StarMOBILE Smart Cable is part of the dealership essential tool program for U.S., Mexico, and Canada Dealers. Dealers in these markets can expect to automatically receive a StarMOBILE Smart Cable in the July/August 2011 timeframe.

*NOTE: The wiTECH VCI Pod can support vehicles with the PowerNet vehicle architecture using the standard vehicle cable.
